A Letter to Kaitlyn Grace Hansen | Mi Carta para Kaitlyn Grace Hansen

Hey Everyone,

August 5th, 2017

These past weeks have been a little rough, but especially this week has been extremely hard. As Saturday May, 19th, 2018 gets closer, it has me feeling a very heavy heart. An incredible friend named Kaitlyn Grace Hansen won't be attending this year's Walk to Cure Arthritis because we lost her back on October 30th, 2017. She was so inspirational and all we spoke about was how much we wanted to do with the Arthritis Foundation in order to spread awareness and advocate for the millions of people suffering from this illness. I decided to write a letter to her...

 Dear Kaitlyn,

May 16th, 2015
My incredible warrior. Thank you for all the strength you gave me back in 2015 when I first started to speak up about my illness. Our paths crossed because we suffer from the same illness and we had never spoken up about anything to anyone. You messaged me on Instagram because you saw a simple link to my donation page for the 2015 Walk to Cure Arthritis. You asked me what it was about and we simply exchanged our stories. We end up realizing we live in the same state and we didn't live far from each other. You signed up to the walk even though there was about 1 week left and that was the start of your advocacy. You thanked me for giving you so much information about an incredible foundation that does everything to help anyone feel like they belong and that they aren't alone suffering from this illness. We exchanged phone numbers and it began an incredible bond no one will ever get in between of. Belmont Lake State Park in Long Island, New York was the place where we finally met in person. After speaking to you for a week it felt like we knew each other for years. We gave each other the biggest hug and immediately acted as if we friends for years. We walked that walk together and spoke about our journey with our JRA the entire time. Meeting you meant the world to me. After deciding to speak up on social media for the very first time, meeting you pushed me to continue to do what I was doing. Being the 1st person I met with JRA who was around the same age as I was incredible.
May 21st, 2016
That moment simply made me feel like I wasn't suffering with this illness alone. You understood me and felt everything I felt (even though that wasn't a good thing). We just connected. We stayed in touch almost every day and ended up going to a music festival together, we continued to do all the walks together and most importantly I attended your baby's baptism celebration. We grew to love each other and be there for one another through all the good and bad times. Kaitlyn, you were such an amazing person that left such an incredible impact on my life. I never expected for us to become so close, but im grateful I can call you my friend. We pushed each other to advocate about Juvenile Arthritis and we would always talk about what Arthritis Foundation events we could go together. This year we had planned to go to the Advocacy Summit together as well as the Juvenile Arthritis Conference, but unfortunately we did not have the incredible opportunity to do those together. This year's walk will be hard. The one event we did not miss for anything I won't be able to hug you tight and be all excited for the walk.
May 20th, 2017
The last walk you attended was a huge accomplishment for me. Being the Young Adult Honoree for the walk made me realize that all the hard work we would do paid off and was being recognized for it. Thank you for being my push in all of this. Kaitlyn, I will miss you so much this year and I know I will be surrounded by all your close friends and family. I know you will be walking by my side and giving me the push to be strong tomorrow. I will forever be #GR84K8 (Great for Kait). Thank you for being YOU and for leaving such a strong impact on my life. We will always be STRONGER THAN ARTHRITIS!

Love you always,
   Paula

Hola Todos,

Siempre seremos MAS FUERTE QUE EL ARTRITIS!

Siempre te recordare,
    Paula

My Accomplishment Today | Mi Gran Logro de Hoy

Hey Everyone,

It's been a total of a year and a half since I was actually in a gym working out doing both cardio and strength training. Today, I started the gym once again and I was able to workout without feeling pain or being held back by my JRA. I consider this a HUGE accomplishment because I was always playing sports or staying active. This is the longest I have gone without being active. Yes, I would do yoga once in a while at home, but I was always feeling discomfort or pain. When I started my Xeljanz XR and saw my incredible reaction to it, I wanted to wait a little to see if I felt comfortable enough to start the gym again. February 22nd, 2018 really was the day that changed my way of living. I had gone an entire year feeling pain and literally allowing JRA to take control over my entire life. If it wasn't for Xeljanz XR, I wouldn't have stepped foot in a gym to workout today. I am feeling so grateful that I can go back to doing something I loved doing. Since I wasn't playing sports, the gym became my favorite thing to do. I only did an hour of both cardio and strength training and then I sat in the sauna for 30 minutes. In those 30 minutes I thought a lot about all the pain I dealt with for an entire year. It breaks my heart that I had to literally stop doing everything I loved to do, but I'll look at it as a little break to come back stronger. I am feeling extremely sore from today's hour, but I know as the days pass I will get stronger and I'll be able to do everything I once did. For me this means everything to me. It shows me that I can take control over my life again. Not having to worry about pain stopping me from doing what I want to do or what I like to do. I am hoping this is a new beginning for me and I will take advantage of it as much as I can because a life without pain is amazing and not everyone gets this happiness with their treatments. People always question me why I bother working out and it annoys me. I do it because of my health. Exercise is the best thing to do for my Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and that's why I work out. I can go months without working out due to a flare up or even like now that I went over a year, but I try my best to stay active. It's not easy and I hate when people question me was to why I go to the gym to workout because "I don't need it". Reality is that I do need it!

Hola Todos,

Mi ARJ (Artritis Reumatoide Juvenil) no me detuvo hoy.
