My 3 Month Struggle | 3 Meses de Lucha

Hey Everyone,

The past 3 months have been extremely difficult. On my last post on my 1 year anniversary I explained that my Xeljanz XR was no longer working for me. Since 11/11/17 I have seen my Rheumatologist about 3 times and have been to her office about 7 times (once every week). I was switched to Orencia (abatacept) ClickJect 125mg and after the first dosage I felt the change right away. I felt a bit better and was capable of running up and down the stairs again. After that injection, I believed I was going to have control of my life again. Little did I know I was going to go through a rough 7 weeks. I had so many issues between my insurance and getting my medication. My doctor's office kept going back and fourth with them in order for them to give me the medication I NEEDED! The insurance kept denying my medication and a couple of people at the doctor's office were starting to get really mad at the fact I needed the medication and was not getting it. My doctor had to appeal the insurance's decision 3 times and by the 3rd time I was hoping it would work. Nope, the 3rd appeal did not work. The insurance was not having it and the insurance wanted to send me a medication that THEY believed was BEST for me when my Rheumatologist has never worked with that medication. She didn't even really know the side effects neither did she know if it was a pre-filled syringe or a pen or even if it hurt or not. I find it ridiculous that an insurance was telling my PROFESSIONAL DOCTOR what to prescribe to me. But long story short, the insurance did not allow me to get Orencia AT ALL. Next step was to try to get on a patient assistant program to receive my Orencia. Well, it started off smoothly, but once again insurance intervened in their decision. At this point I gave up and did not see any reason to continue fighting. I got depressed (currently still am) and just got it into my head that I was just going to continue to live life with excruciating pain and not be able to do the things I loved to do. I had lost all hope of getting my life back. My doctor decided to prescribe me Plaquenil to help me in the meantime as well as alongside the Orencia if I would ever get it. I saw it helped me with the pain. I was even reconsidering if I needed any more medication, but since my flare has been so bad I knew I had to be on more than just Plaquenil. There was just one more thing we could possibly try to get my medication. This was already 5 weeks in. The company who manufactures Orencia have a foundation in order to help when issues like this arise for a patient. It took a little while for everything to be processed, but on 12/31/18 I received the phone call that I was approved by the foundation to receive my medication with no charge! What a perfect way to end the year right? I am telling you, it's been a long 3 months for me. Throughout all this time my doctor was extremely helpful and was giving me sample shots when they were available, but that meant I would have to go without medication until more samples came in. For the last 2 weeks I had been off the Orencia completely due to the fact they had no more samples available. Friday 01/11/19, I finally received the delivery of my Orencia and seeing the package just made me tear of joy because maybe I will be getting my life back again.  Overall, my pain has been from a 1-10 scale, at a 10 most of the days. December 20th was my 13th year anniversary being diagnosed with my JRA. The holidays were so rough for me. Reminded me a lot about when I was first diagnosed and had to spend the holidays in bed because I couldn't walk. These past holidays it was so hard that it made me feel even more depressed for the simple fact of feeling pain and not being able to feel comfortable. I also celebrated my 25th birthday just a month ago and even that I wasn't crazy excited about like I usually am. The pain has taken over my life. I haven't been myself for a couple of months and it brings me down so much. I can say that my JRA has officially taken control of my life completely. I'm hoping that maybe ONE day I will be back to enjoying life how I was. The pain I have felt has made me envy people who can walk without feeling pain and do their every day life without any limitations. I feel like during my remissions I have taken life for granted. I never enjoyed the ability to do every single thing without limitations or without feeling pain. If I ever reach remission again, I will take advantage of every second being able to do my every day life all over again. I hope I will be able to write about improvement the next blog post, but I am just taking it day by day. Just typing this post up took me 3 months only because my hands get extremely tired and start hurting after a typing a couple of sentences. I hope I will have better news for you all on my next post.

   *Stronger than Arthritis*

Hola Todos!

No me quedaban esperanzas.
