As the JA Conferences Begin | Empezaron las Conferencias Nacional de Artritis Juvenil

Hey Everyone,
JA Conferences for the Arthritis Foundation began Thursday June 28th! The first one is taking place right now in Seattle, WA. It will go on until tomorrow July 1st and the second JA Conference will be taking place in Washington, D.C. The second Conference will go from August 2nd till August 5th. This is a nationwide event that has been done by the Arthritis Foundation since 1984, which brings together kids and families living with Juvenile Arthritis. This Juvenile Arthritis (JA) Conference is where many families come together to get better informed about JA and other rheumatic diseases. Many kids, teens, and young adults get together to share their stories, exchange ideas that can make living with their illnesses a little easier. We get to learn about the latest medical research done and new treatments or ways to deal with challenges at home or at school. Even though these conferences are full of information, you do get to have a lot of fun with the new friends you make whether you're a child, teen, young adult, or the parents of kids living with JA. These conferences are incredible for those who have not had the opportunity to make it to one. Sadly, I will not be making it to any of the conferences this year. But on this post, I'll talk a little bit about my experiences in the 2 different conferences I've been able to attend.

This was my first JA Conference and I can tell you it was an emotional 4 days, emotional in a GREAT way. This was the first event that I traveled for with the Arthritis Foundation. I am beyond blessed to have attended this conference because it made me open up more about my JRA and how it makes me ME! I was able to meet and become incredible friends with people my age or younger that have JRA just like me. This conference made me really realize that I wasn't alone fighting with this illness. I saw hundreds of kids younger than me and young adults my age or even older that live with this illness. I felt like I was home because everyone in that hotel that was part of the conference understood me completely! It was the first time I didn't feel alone when it came to my illness.

JA Conference 2017 - Indianapolis, IN
Instagram Post Aug 13th,2017
Wow. This conference was INCREDIBLE! It was the most special and memorable conferences out of the two. I loved the whole concept of the conference. It was such a special year because I attended the month after I was the Young Adult Honoree for the Walk to Cure Arthritis Long Island, NY walk. I had this fire in me about spreading awareness and getting involved with the foundation more than I was. I say this conference was memorable because I was able to be a part of 2 different sessions. One day I spoke to the parents of children living with JA and the transitions from Pediatric Rheumatology to Adult Rheumatology. In this Transitional session, I was partnered with an incredible JRA warrior named Rachel Sauls (Rachel + Rheum Blog) and an incredible Pediatric Rheumatologist named Dr. Peter Chira, MD (Link to View entire video: Session with Parents about Transitioning from Pediatric Rheumatology to Adult Rheumatology  ). We answered many questions from parents about many different topics, which you will see if you watch the video on the link. The day after that session, I was partnered with Dr. Peter Chira, MD once again, but this time to speak to 5th and 6th graders who have JA. This hit my heart so hard that after
Dr. Peter Chira, MD.
Rachel Sauls
I stepped out of the room from talking to them and answering their questions like, "Why do we have to take shots, why do we have to take medication, why can't I do everything my friends do," I bursted into tears. I broke down because not only was it an incredible experience to talk to kids that are the same age that I had when I was first diagnosed, but it brought back so many memories of the things I used to say and how small I was when I was diagnosed with this illness. These kids will never know how much their hugs and their questions and laughs played a huge role in my life. I cried for about 30 minutes because it touched my heart so much and I was not expecting it to get to me so much. I would love to speak to 5th and 6th graders again because I know exactly what they're going through. Overall, all the friendship I gained at this conference were amazing. Till this day I stay in touch with most and we all live in different states. We all come together at this conference not knowing everyone, but you leave learning and getting closer to others and your friendship circle grows because we all understand what we go through. This will be one of the best experiences I've ever had with the incredible Arthritis Foundation. Here are some pictures of all the people I met at this conference that made an impact on my experience at this conference.

Hola Todos!

Walk to Cure Arthritis 2018 | Caminata de Artritis 2018

Hey everyone,

Fighting with Paula  #GR84K8 Team
The Walk to Cure Arthritis was on May 19th, 2018. I'm a little late on writing this post, but its been a rough few weeks. The walk was incredible. Even though it rained on us like every single year, it was an incredible event. The Arthritis Foundation Long Island, NY Chapter always does an incredible job setting up for this incredible event and planning every single thing out. Looking back to my last post, this year's walk was very special for me. It was hard attending this years walk only because it was going to be a very emotional one. This year my team included many incredible people. From my family members, family friends, and my boyfriend to Kaitlyn's family and friends. This year we all walked together as my Team "Fighting with Paula" and we walked in honor of Kaitlyn. Her friends created a hashtag that we all used in honor of Kaitlyn ( #GR84K8 ) and used my team name everywhere. I created shirts for the very first time for a walk. It took me two tries to get it right and 1 week before the walk I was able to find a place that was able to create the shirt I wanted on time and at a very amazing price. Thank you CT Embroidery in Ozone Park, NY!
Front and Back of my Team Shirt
Those who purchased a shirt helped me surpass my fundraising goal once again!! My goal was to raise $500 and I raised a total of $810 between people who donated and/or purchased a shirt. So to all of those who donated or bought a shirt, once again I thank you all!! This year I had so much going on in my personal life that I did not think I would reach my goal. But everyone who helped made it possible! To my team thank you all so much for walking with me and attending this special event with me. At this year's walk I was given the opportunity to get up on stage again, but to talk about my dear friend Kaitlyn. It was a very emotional moment, but all of my teammates gave me the strength to continue speaking. 2018's walk was increidble and I can't wait to see how next year's walk will be. I hope next year we will have a sunny walk because in all the walks I've attended, it has rained EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Here are a few pictures of my incredible teammates who attended the walk with me as well as a clip of my speech about our incredible warrior Kaitlyn Grace Hansen!

Hola Todos!
